The importance of Psychoeducation beyond diagnosis

Dr Maite Ferrin, Consultant CHILD AND ADOLESCENT Psychiatrist, NHS HARINGEY CAMHS and ReCognition Health Clinic

About this Event

Various international guidelines on ADHD/ADD have recommended psychoeducation programmes as a valuable component of the multimodal non-pharmacological management of the condition, both at the outset of treatment and throughout its course (American Academy of Paediatrics, 2011; Canadian Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Resource Alliance, 2011; NICE, 2008).

Psychoeducation is important for several reasons. It provides families with a clear, scientifically supported understanding of ADHD/ADD, empowering both parents or carers and the individual with ADHD/ADD by reducing reliance on clinicians. It aids in recognising symptoms and mitigating their impact, which is crucial given that ADHD/ADD can cause significant impairment across many areas of life. Patients and their families need guidance on how to manage these challenges effectively. Rather than rushing to initiate medication, it is essential to adequately educate the patient and their families, as this approach improves treatment adherence and helps manage expectations. Evidence also shows that even those responding well to treatment may experience deterioration if they do not make necessary lifestyle changes. Psychoeducation offers practical tools to support the child at home, in school, and beyond, while also providing information on accessing support outside clinical settings. Additionally, families benefit from being part of a supportive group environment with others facing similar challenges.
